Zeehan is an interesting mix of historic and modern
mining town. It sits on
Tasmania’s rugged west coast 286 km n-w of
Hobart and
was named by explorer, Abel Tasman after a 17th
century brig. The discovery of tin (1870s) and
silver-lead (1880s) lead to
Tasmania’s largest mining boom with the
settlement dubbed ‘Silver City of the West’ and
becoming the state’s 3rd largest settlement. However
by early 20th century mining had declined threatening
the town’s future until most fortuitously, a nearby
tin mine has attracted workers back to the
town.
Accommodation:
Zeehan has a couple of hotels & motels, holiday
