Yorketown is the southern Yorke
Peninsula's largest town located 226 km west of
Adelaide.
This major service town at the centre of a rich
cereal growing area is surrounded by numerous inland
salt lakes, some of which are still mined. European
settlement began in 1840s with salt harvesting a
major industry between 1890s-1930s. The town was
named after the surveyor who laid it out in
1872.
