Wycheproof is a service township on the edge of
the Goldfields/Mallee-Murray
region. It is 282 km n-w of Melbourne and
its name is said to derive from the Aboriginal
‘witchi-poorp’ meaning ‘grass on a hill’ no doubt
referring to nearby Mt Wycheproof. Wycheproof has a
couple of unusual features. The railway line which
transports up to 60 wheat carriages is situated in
the middle of the main street and Mt Wycheproof, at
only 43 m, has the honour of being named the world’s
smallest mountain. The area was first settled in
1870s and the railway arrived a decade later. Tchum
Lakes (31 km west) popular for watersports and
surrounded by diverse native flora & fauna.
