Winton is a remote Outback township 1 353 km n-w of Brisbane. It is known as 'Matilda Country' as 'Banjo' Patterson wrote his famous song, Waltzing Matilda nearby. Winton was settled in 1870s and originally called Pelican Waterhole. Its history includes a famous shearers' strike (1890s) when martial law was declared and Qantas had its first registered office here. Winton's waters upply is provided by deep artesian bores and important industries today include sheep and cattle raising. Bladensburg NP (8 km south) features Aboriginal art, diverse wildlife and challenging bushwalks. Back To Winton (Easter), Waltzing Matilda Festival (June), Outback Festival (Sept - odd numbered years).
