Windsor is an important
Hawkesbury River township 56 km n-w of Sydney. Steeped in
history and charm, it is Australia’s 3rd oldest
European settlement having been settled in 1794.
Windsor is one of 5 Macquarie towns (Richmond,
Castlereagh, Wilberforce, Pitt Town) established by
Gov. Macquarie who chose the site for its shipping
access and agricultural potential. Unfortunately, its
proximity to the river has also resulted in a number
of devastating floods. Today it is the commercial and
administrative centre of the region as well as an
outer Sydney suburb due to the metropolitan sprawl,
yet is also surrounded by some stunning national
parks.
