The Whitsunday Islands are a
collection of beautiful and popular Great Barrier
Reef islands named by Capt Cook (1770) when he
passed through the Whitsunday passage on Whit Sunday.
The Whitsundays offer almost perfect weather
conditions, a huge range of sporting activities and a
great diversity in accommodation. The 'town' of
Whitsunday was established in 1987 comprising the
small villages of
Airlie Beach, Cannonvale, Jubilee Pocket and
Shute Harbour. The main islands in the group
consist of
Brampton (32 km n-e of
Mackay,
Daydream (5 km n-e of Shute Harbour),
Hamilton (16 km s-e of Shute Harbour),
Hayman (25 km n-e of Shute Harbour),
Hook (20 km n-e of Shute Harbour),
Lindeman (67 km north of Mackay),
Long (9 km s-e of Shute Harbour),
South Molle (8 km east of Shute Habour),
Whitsunday (25 km east of Shute Harbour).
