The state's south boasts the magnificent Great Ocean Road, Mornington Peninsula, Wilsons Promontory and delightful penguin-inhabited Phillip Island. Early gold discoveries helped boost the state's economy enormously with main centres of Bendigo & Ballarat located west of Melbourne. Further west and north-west are the rugged ancient Grampian mountains and outback mallee country. Alpine High Country famous for its excellent winter skiing & bushwalking is found in the state's north-east. Victoria's major industries are manufacturing, agriculture, retail trade and property & business services. The state's floral emblem is the Common Heath.
