Triabunna is a pleasant SE Tasmanian port on the state’s east coast 84 km n-e of Hobart. The town, whose Aboriginal name is said to mean ‘native hen’, began life as a garrison town for nearby Maria Island penal settlement and an important whaling base in 1820s. Today Triabunna is a quiet fishing (scallops & abalone) and timber town. Spring Bay Festival (Jan).
