Torres
Strait
Torres Strait is situated north of Cape York Peninsula (Qld). It separates the Australian mainland & New Guinea and links the Coral Sea (east) and the Arafura Sea (west). First navigated in 1605 by Luis Váez de Torres, some of its islands have been occupied for over 2 000 years. As the Strait is shallow and riddled with small islands & reefs, it is known to be treacherous to navigate. Torres Strait comprises over 270 islands but only about 17 have permanent settlements with a combined population of over 7 000. The islands are Australian territory with Waiben (Thursday Island) the administrative centre although Muralag (Prince of Wales Island) is the largest. Pearling was a vital industry between 1860s – 1970s prior to the advent of cultured pearls.
