(Pop 1 600)
Tocumwal is a pretty Riverina service centre 716 km s-w of Sydney. Scenically located on the Murray River (and Victorian border), it has also developed into a tourist holiday destination in recent years. Local Aborigines named the area ‘Tocumiva’ meaning ‘deep hole’ referring to the nearby 25 m deep Blowhole. Europeans arrived in 1840s and the settlement became an important border customs depot for some time. Today the local economy’s mainstays are grains, wool, cattle, citrus fruits & tourism. Tocumwal Aerodrome, Australia’s largest WWII RAAF base, is now used for glider activities. Tocumwal Classic (fishing) (Jan), Pioneer Skills Day (Mar), Open Garden Weekend (Oct).
