The Loch
Ard
The Loch Ard was a 3-masted clipper ship built in Scotland. Operating as a passenger ship between Great Britain and Australia, it was nearing Melbourne in 1878 when it encountered heavy fog and missed Cape Otway lighthouse. It was wrecked on Muttonbird Island’s rugged cliffs on Victoria’s infamous Shipwreck Coast near Port Campbell. Of 54 passengers and crew, only two survived. Amazingly, a delicate porcelain peacock (part of the cargo) was later found intact and is today displayed in Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum together with several other relics.
