Tanami Desert - WA/NT
The Tanami Desert is found in northern Australia extending from WA-NT. At 184 500 sq km, it is the country’s 3rd largest desert and covered in rocky hills, termite mounds & spinifex plains. The Tanami lies north of the Gibson Desert, east of the Great Sandy Desert & north west of Alice Springs and is home to Lakes Surprise (NT) & Gregory (WA). As a significant biological area, it protects numerous endangered flora, fauna & bird species but is also besieged by feral animals (camels, rabbits, cats), overgrazing (by cattle) & fires. The Desert receives a substantial 430 mm average annual rainfall which evaporates quickly during summer’s long hot days. Flooding can occur though and travelling times are most pleasant during the winter months, although night temperatures can be very cold. The Tanami ‘Track’ (1 040 km) crosses the Desert and is kept in good condition thanks to various mining companies in the area. 4WDs are not necessary if conditions are dry, but spare parts, fuel, water etc are essential for any desert travel. Permits are required if deviating from the Track.
