Sturt’s Desert
Rose
Sturt’s Desert Rose is a pretty mauve flower with a darker contrasting centre. The compact shrub reaches between 1-2 m in height and has dark green leaves. Early famous explorer, Capt Charles Sturt collected samples during his outback expedition in 1844. The shrub favours rocky slopes or dry river/creek beds and is found in all states except Victoria and Tasmania. Sturt’s Desert Rose has also been called Darling River Rose, Cotton Rosebush, Australian Cotton. This drought-tolerant plant bears a fruit capsule that contains many small seeds and the height of flowering occurs in late winter. The NT adopted Sturt’s Desert Rose as its floral emblem in 1961 and in 1978 the new NT flag appeared featuring one third with a black background and a white Southern Cross and the other two thirds ochre with a stylized 7 (symbolic) petalled Desert Rose.
