Mountains in summer
The Snowy Mountains is a spectacular region in
NSW, encompassing Australia's highest mountain
ranges together with the Monaro flat plains providing
both skiing and grazing country. Lamb and cattle and
sheep studs constitute a vital part of the economy,
however the main attraction to visitors is the high
country and its excellent ski fields. Beyond the
relatively short ski season, the area is also popular
in spring and summer for its amazing wildflower
displays and alpine country walking trails. Other
important features of this region are the numerous
dams, lakes & hydro electric power stations that
form part of the Snowy Mts Hydro Electric Scheme
(1950s.)
Cooma is the region's main business and
commercial centre with
Jindabyne acting as the gateway to the
snowfields.
