Snakes
Australia has about 100 Poisonous Snakes and accounts for 7 out of 10 of the world’s most venomous species. Although highly dangerous to many animals, only about a dozen poisonous snakes threaten humans. Amongst them are the Brown, Tiger, Death Adder, King Brown, Mulga, Red Bellied Black, some sea snakes and the Taipan being the most deadly. Snakes have excellent eyesight, smell by way of their (forked) tongues and hear through vibrations from the ground. However, far from being aggressive, they are generally shy and inoffensive. Considering the number of snakes in Australia, there are very few snake bites and most occur while trying to handle or kill the reptiles or accidentally stepping on them. Don’t handle them and allow them to escape and you need not unduly fear them!
