Skipton is a Victorian Goldfields region rural service centre on the Glenelg Hwy 192 km west of Melbourne. Established in 1830s by early pastoralists, a township emerged in 1850s. Skipton, which is Anglo-Saxon for ‘sheep town’, is an apt description for this thriving wool growing area. It is also known as the ‘home of the platypus’. Mt Widderin Caves (interesting volcanic caves) and Snake Valley Church (historic bluestone church) are both nearby.
