Simpson Desert
The Simpson Desert is a vast sand dune desert encompassing over 170 000 sq km in central Australia. It is located within Qld, SA & NT and is bounded by the Plenty Hwy (north), the Georgina & Diamantina Rivers (east), Lake Eyre (south) and the Finke, Macumba, Sevenson & Todd Rivers (west). The Simpson contains over 1 000 sand dunes including the world’s longest parallel dunes. Some measure up to 30 m in height with the highest, Nappanerica or Big Red, reaching 40 m. Although there are no maintained roads within the desert, there are a number of survey and exploration tracks such as Rig Road, French Line & QAA Line. The Oodnadatta-Birdsville Track is the most popular but all require 4 WD and often permits.
