Shute Harbour, although only a tiny settlement, is a major port for trips to the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef. It is located 1 108 km north of Brisbane and said to have the Southern Hemisphere's largest seaplane airbase, due to the magnitude of tourist numbers each year. Located 43 km south is the 19 000 ha Conway NP which is Qld's largest coastal park with many excellent walks, lookouts and a prolific birdlife.
