Shark
Sharks are a type of fish closely related to rays but with a full skeletal form and streamlined body breathing through gill slits. They range in size from small catsharks (0.5 m) (or smaller for deepwater varieties) to huge whales sharks (18 m). There are about 20 families of shark and most are found in Australia preferring temperate and tropical oceanic conditions. The majority of sharks are predators feeding on other fish, marine mammals and turtles while certain ones are filter feeders using gill rakers. Diets do vary however depending on species with, for example, hammerheads known for favouring stingrays, Port Jackson sharks being bottom feeders and tiger sharks referred to as the ocean’s ‘garbage bins’ taking whatever they can find.
