Rainbow Serpent
The Rainbow Serpent or Rainbow Snake is an intrinsic part of Aboriginal Dreamtime mythology. Believed to originate underground, massive mountains & gorges were formed as it surged upward creating and controlling the continent’s most precious resource, water. Today the Rainbow Serpent is associated with ceremonies concerning, land, fertility and abundance, as well as the organisation of the community and the keeping of peace. It is part of the beliefs of all indigenous people but its creative role has been more fervently embraced by the northern Australian (Arnhem Land) tribes. The Rainbow Serpent is seen as both a compassionate protector and vengeful punisher of wrong doing.
