Queanbeyan is a busy SW NSW town on the Queanbeyan River. It is located 290 km s-w of Sydney and just  18 km s-e of Canberra. Original inhabitants were the Ngarigu Aborigines who named the area meaning 'clear waters' with white squatter settlement beginning in 1824. Gold discoveries (1851), the railway (1887) and the construction of Canberra (1910-20s) ensured the town's future. Today agriculture, manufacturing, service & tourism support the local economy. Many residents commute to Canberra for work. Queanbeyan Markets 2nd Sun each month. Queanbeyan Show (Nov).
