Port Jackson is Sydney’s deep, natural harbour of 55 sq km. Containing the many waterways and inlets between North and South Head, it measures 19 km in length with a perimeter of about 320 km. Port Jackson contains North Harbour, Middle Harbour and Sydney Harbour which the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers flow into. The harbour is crossed by the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and its famous landmark, the Sydney Harbour Bridge (between the CBD to the north shore). Its other spectacular landmark is the Sydney Opera House. Sighted by James Cook in 1770, Australia’s first colony was established here in 1788. The harbour is home to numerous islands including Fort Denison, Cockatoo, Goat and Shark.
