The Porongurup Range lies 406 km s-e of Perth just north of Albany. The highest peak in this ancient range (over 12 million years) is Devil’s Slide (670 m). Farming began in the area in 1850s followed by timber felling in 1880s. The Range is protected by the Porongurup NP (25 sq km) but has suffered through cyclones and devastating fires – the most recent in 2007 which destroyed 95% of the park. Of its many geographic features are Balancing Rock, Castle Rock, Millinup Pass, Gibraltar Rock.
