Their main threats are snakes, lizards, rats, and man - through
development and pollution. Mating occurs between
June-Oct with 2-4 eggs being laid. The young, who have
no official name, suckle from the mother’s mammary
glands. Platypus are considered semi aquatic with soft
and extremely sensitive rubbery bills used for feeding
and foraging. They are mostly solitary creatures and
completely protected in Australia. If
disturbed, they growl softly and an interesting feature
of the male is a poisonous gland on their thigh which
is venomous enough to kill small animals and used in
territorial fights and as defence.
