Their main threats are snakes, lizards, rats, and man - through development and pollution. Mating occurs between June-Oct with 2-4 eggs being laid. The young, who have no official name, suckle from the mother’s mammary glands. Platypus are considered semi aquatic with soft and extremely sensitive rubbery bills used for feeding and foraging. They are mostly solitary creatures and completely protected in Australia. If disturbed, they growl softly and an interesting feature of the male is a poisonous gland on their thigh which is venomous enough to kill small animals and used in territorial fights and as defence.
