Platypus
The Platypus is a monotreme - one of only two egg-laying mammals in the world - the other is the echidna. A male averages 2 kg (weight) and 40 cm (length) with females considerably smaller. These shy cautious creatures are found in freshwater rivers and lakes of Eastern Australia from Cape York Peninsula to Tasmania. Apart from their paws, feet and snout they are covered in brown/yellow woolly fur. They use their webbed hands and feet for swimming and their tail acts as a rudder. Platypuses live in sheltered burrows and are most active at night. They feed on worms, insects, snails and larvae and live to about 12 years.
