Omeo is an historic East Gippsland goldmining township. Located 402 km n-e of Melbourne at the edge of the Victorian Alps, Omeo is appropriately named as it is Aboriginal for ‘mountains’. This former wild frontier town (reputedly Australia’s roughest) was first settled by Europeans in 1830s with gold discovered in 1850s. Earthquakes (1885 & 1892) and disastrous bushfires (1939) destroyed much of the town, however several heritage buildings survived. Today Omeo is a quiet peaceful settlement surrounded by timber cattle & sheep properties. Rodeo & Market (Easter).
Accommodation:
Omeo has a motel, a couple of hotels, a guesthouse, holiday apartments & a caravan park.
Visitor Information Centre: German Cuckoo Clock Shop, Day Ave (Great Alpine Rd). Tel (03) 5159 1552.
