Islands Tas 7150

Bruny Island is a popular tourist destination 74 km south of Hobart between the wild Pacific Ocean and calm D’Entrecasteaux Channel waters. Named after the early French explorer, Bruni D’Entrecasteaux, the island measures 50 km in length and is actually two islands linked by a narrow isthmus, ‘The Neck’. Sadly, Bruny Island also has a tragic Aboriginal history with whalers, sealers & convicts being the main culprits. The island covers over 36 000 ha and the flat northern section is used for sheep & cattle grazing, while the more hilly south is heavily timbered. Apples are also grown and other small settlements include Adventure Bay, Lunawanna & Alonnah. South Bruny Island NP offers some breathtaking scenery, excellent bushwalking tracks, rainforest waterfalls and Australia’s 2nd oldest lighthouse (1836). Regular car ferries operate from the mainland. Bruny Island Surf Classic (Feb).
Accommodation: Bruny Island has a hotel, many holiday apartments/cottages/lodges and a couple of caravan parks.
Visitor Information Centre: 81 Ferry Rd, Kettering. Tel (03) 6267 4494.
