The New England district of Northern NSW is a spectacular highland area forming part of the Great Dividing Range. Traditionally, this region is defined as being located between the Qld border (north) and the Liverpool Range (south). Generally following the New England Hwy (15) it includes the towns/cities of Tenterfield, Glen Innes, Inverell, Armidale, GuyraUralla, Walcha & Tamworth. New England, due to its elevation of mostly above 800 m, experiences a cooler climate, spectacular granite landscape and distinctive vegetation – much of it being in the form of deciduous European trees. The district is also known as the Northern Tablelands or New England Plateau with the highest point being 1 600 m (Round Mountain). If accepting the wider description of this region, then the towns of Moree, Warialda, Narrabri, Barraba, Manilla, Gunnedah, Quirindi should also be included on the western fringe. The eastern edge of the Plateau is dominated by several ruggedly beautiful national parks – Washpool, Gibraltar Range, Nymboida, Guy Fawkes River, Cathedral Rock, New England, Oxley Wild Rivers. Crossing the New England region (east/west) are the Bruxner Hwy, Gwydir Hwy, Waterfall Way, Oxley Hwy.
