Norfolk Island
Pines
Norfolk Island Pines are the island’s best-known symbol and one is represented on the flag. These conifer trees are also found in Australia & NZ but are not true pines. They grow to between 50-65 m and are wind and salt tolerant which explains why they thrive in coastal areas. Norfolk Pine cones release their nutty edible seeds upon maturity and the wood is excellent for woodturning and carving. One of Norfolk Island’s largest trees is located in the national park at Hollow Pine. The trees also do well indoors in pots.
