Nambucca Heads is a popular Coffs Coast holiday
destination. It sits at the mouth of the Nambucca
River and is 512 km north of Sydney. Original
inhabitants were the Dainggatti & Gumbaynggir
Aborigines
who named the area meaning 'entrance to the waters'.
White settlement began in 1867 and the railway
arrived in 1923 resulting in the emergence of holiday
makers. The breakwater was built in 1895 due to
ongoing sandbar problems and the Vee Wall was added
in 1930. Today tourism is a mainstay of the economy
together with timber & primary
industries. September Fest is held annually on
the Stuart Island estuary which also contains an
