Nambour is Queensland's most southerly sugar town. Located 101 km north of Brisbane on the Bruce Hwy, this relatively quiet but important Sunshine Coast service town has relied on sugar cane as a major industry since 1890s. During crushing season (July-Oct) it is common to see small locomotives hauling the cane through the town's main street. Nambour's name is derived from the Aboriginal word describing a red flowering tea-tree. Other important crops grown here include bananas, macadamias, pineapples & citrus fruits. Nearby Mapleton Falls NP features volcanic formations, waterfalls, panoramic views & excellent birdwatching.
Accommodation: Nambour has half a dozen hotels/motels and a caravan park.
