Murwillumbah is a peaceful Northern
NSW township 850 km north of Sydney. Its
sits on the Tweed River and is only 13 km
south of the Qld border
and 132 km south of Brisbane. Original
inhabitants were the Bundjalung Aborigines who
named the area meaning 'good camping place'. White
settlement began with timbercutters in 1840s and
sugarcane was first planted in 1869. A major fire in
1907 almost destroyed the town. Tourism began
developing from 1960s. Since being bypassed by the
Pacific Hwy (joining Sydney & Brisbane) the town
has become quieter. Murwillumbah markets 2nd Sun each
