Murray River NSW/VIC/SA
The Murray River (‘Mighty Murray’) is Australia’s longest river. It has its source in the Australian Alps, follows the NSW/Vic border and its shallow mouth is at Lake Alexandrina near Goolwa (SA). Measuring 2 375 km, when combined within the Murray-Darling river system, its total length equates to 3 750 km. The Murray’s flow is fairly limited and on rare occasions during extreme droughts, has been known to dry up completely. Its major centres include Albury/Wodonga (NSW/Vic), Echuca & Swan Hill (Vic) and Mildura, Renmark, Murray Bridge (SA). Sadly, the quality of the Murray has been in decline for many years due to severe climatic conditions, river regulation and agricultural pollution. The river was originally plied by paddle steamers, however the advent of rail transport made for a more efficient and economic method of haulage.  Today, the Murray’s traffic is predominantly recreational.
