Mount Barker is the largest town in the Adelaide Hills 33 km s-e of Adelaide. Sitting at the base of the mountain of the same name, this rapidly growing commercial city has also developed into a commuter satellite centre due to its proximity to the capital. Original inhabitants were the Peramangk Aborigines with Mount Barker Summit still regarded as one of their sacred sites in the area. Named after the captain who first discovered the area in 1830, Mount Barker became an important wheat producing region with its future ensured by railway (1883).
