Melville Island is the larger of the two Tiwi Islands covering an area of 5 800 sq km. It is located 26 km off the Northern Territory coast in the Timor Sea, is 105 km long x 72 wide and is only two km from Bathurst Island separated by the Apsley Strait. Ownership was handed back to the Tiwi Aborigines in 1978 and much of the indigenous reservation is made up of mangrove jungles and sandy soil. Visitor permits are required by the Tiwi Island Land Council Tel (08) 8981 4891.
