Malleefowl
Malleefowl, as their name implies, inhabit mallee scrub lands located in southern and south west Australia. These attractive birds feature brown-black-white patterned plumage and pale underparts. Their call various depending on circumstances - soft when communicating, a deep grunt if threatened and a loud boom when marking territory. Malleefowl average 60 cm in length and are Australia’s largest mound builders with some over a metre high and 5 metres wide. Both parents tend the mound and regulate its temperature until the chicks are born after which time the young are independent. Sadly malleefowl numbers are decreasing due to reduced mallee habitat, foxes and long drought periods.
