Maldon, with its remarkably well-preserved historic buildings, streets, cottages & gardens, was deservedly listed as Victoria's first National Trust town (1966). Located 138 km n-w of Melbourne, its historic ambience draws large numbers of visitors annually. The Wemba-Wemba Aborigines originally inhabited the area with early squatters arriving in 1840s and gold discovered in 1853. Maldon was named after an English town. Campdraft (Feb), Easter Fair, Vintage Car Hill Climb (Oct), Folk Festival (Oct/Nov).
