MacDonnell Ranges - NT
MacDonnell Ranges span 644 km in length both east & west of Alice Springs. These ancient and dramatically eroded peaks have been the traditional home of the Arrernte Aborigines and were named after an early SA Governor. East MacDonnell Ranges are home to Arltunga, a goldmining ghost town, Trephina Gorge, Ruby Gap Nature Park & John Hayes Rockhole.

West MacDonnell Ranges features gorges (Ormiston, Serpentine, Glen Helen, Redbank), gaps (Simpsons, Emily, Jessie), Standley Chasm (on private land), Corroboree Rock Conservation Reserve, Gosse Bluff and Ochre Pits (where Aboriginals sourced the ochre used in their ceremonies & artwork. Highest peaks are Mt Zeil (1 531 m) and Mt Sonder (1 380 m). The Larapinta Trail (233 km) follows the spine of the West MacDonnells in 12 stages from Alice Springs to Mt Sonder summit. It is advised to use the Walker Registration Scheme Tel 1300 650 730 before departing. Best times to visit the MacDonnells (Apr-Oct).
