  Lyrebird
Lyrebird
Superb Lyrebirds resemble pheasants with brown plumage and black bill, feet & legs. However, the distinguishing feature of the adult male is its long ornate lyre-like curved tail feathers which the females lack. Average size is 90 cm and preferred habitat is subtropical forests in south east Australia and Tasmania. Lyrebirds are not good fliers and ground-feed on insects, worms & spiders. Australia is also home to the Albert’s Lyrebird which is a smaller species, redder in colour with a less elaborate tail located only near the Border Ranges (Qld-NSW border). A distinctive feature of the lyrebird is their imitation of other bird calls, dog barks, engines as well as a series of cackling, shrieking and whistling sounds.
