Lithgow is an important Blue Mountains town 144 km n-w of Sydney. Original inhabitants were the Wiradjuri Aborigines and in 1927 the area was named after William Lithgow, the colony's auditor general. The Zig Zag Railway (1869) provided a huge boost for the area's coal and iron industries. Other early industries included a slaughterhouse & meat refrigeration works, breweries and a small arms factory. Ironfest (Apr), Lithgow Blues Music Festival (Nov).
