Laura is a Cape York Peninsula settlement 1 963 km n-w of Brisbane. This predominantly Aboriginal settlement on the Peninsula Developmental Rd services the surrounding district and passing traffic en route north to Cape York. Graziers arrived in 1870s and the railway a decade later. Laura sits close to Quinkan country which honours ancient Aboriginal spirits. There are a number of exceptional rock art sites particularly Split Rock and GuGu Yalangi (12 km south). Lakefield NP a vast park of stunning wetlands, threatened species, river systems & indigenous sacred sites. Accessible in Dry Season and only with 4WD. (May-Oct). Laura Dance & Cultural Festival (huge indigenous event held June odd-numbered years).
