Larapinta Trail NT
The Larapinta Trail is an adventurous, spectacular and grueling walking track covering 223 km. Beginning at the old Alice Springs Telegraph Station, the trail which is divided into 12 sections (1-2 day walks), finishes at the highest point, Mt Sonder. Larapinta extends over the backbone of the West MacDonnell Ranges and includes many Red Centre attractions (Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen). An itinerary of 20 days is suggested to allow for various side trips and although the ranges are not high, they are steep, rocky and rugged with varying walking grades. Walkers should be fit and well equipped but fortunately every section of the trail has vehicle access (4WD) which allows walkers to join or leave at any of the trailheads. Larapinta’s magnificent landscapes include vast tracks of spinifex desert, deep sheltered gorges and lush green oases – ideal for camping out under the stars.
