Lake Eyre is protected by Lake Eyre NP covering almost 1.5 million ha. Spanning an area 144 km long x 77 km wide, Australia’s largest salt lake or salt sink is divided into Lake Eyre North & South. Accessible only by 4WD, it is home to countless varieties of waterbirds when it fills, which has only been 3 times in the last century and a half. Lake Eyre is also the lowest point in Australia at 15 m below sea level. Named after explorer Edward John Eyre (1860), it is best avoided during the summer months (Nov-Mar) and a Desert Parks Pass is required before visiting. Sir Donald Campbell set his world land speed record (645 kph) here in 1964. Air charters operate from Marree, Coober Pedy & William Creek or the lake can be accessed from Muloorina Station (near Marree) or near William Creek turnoff.
