Kyogle is an attractive
Northern Rivers township 746 km north of Sydney. Sitting on
the Richmond River at the foot of Fairy Mountain,
Kyogle is hailed as the ‘Gateway to the Rainforests’
as it is surrounded by vast rainforested tracts.
Originally occupied by the Bundjalung Aborigines who
named the area ‘kaiou-gal’ meaning ‘place of the bush
turkey’, European settlement began from 1840s
establishing agricultural, pastoral & timber
industries. Kyogle receives high annual rainfalls and
has suffered a number of devastating floods (1954,
2008). Major industries are forestry, dairy farming
& cattle. Kyogle is also a gateway to several
national parks including Border Ranges, Toonumbar,
Richmond Ranges. Fairymount Festival of Fairytales
