Koala
Koalas are native Australian marsupials. This particular type of mammal gives birth to their young who are usually blind at birth and in fact little more developed than an embryo. The baby then crawls into the mother’s pouch where it finds and attaches itself to the mother’s teet to continue its development. This birthing process is far less strenuous on mother and baby than those of other mammals and is therefore particularly suited to the harsh Australian conditions.
Often erroneously referred to as ‘bears’, these furry, cuddly creatures are well loved and found only in 4 Australian states (NSW, VIC, SA, Qld). The koala’s herbivorous diet consists mainly of eucalyptus leaves (about 20 species) that are poisonous to most other animals. Sleeping during the day and feeding at night, koalas communicate using a range of noises that resemble loud snores and bellows. They have sharp and strong claws that allow them to climb trees easily. Mostly grey-brown in colour, their stomach fur is white. An average koala measures 70 cm in length and weighs about 10 kg.
