  Kingscote
Kingscote SA 5223
(Pop 1 500)
Kingscote is Kangaroo Island's largest town as well as its administrative & commercial centre. Sitting on pretty Nepean Bay on the island's n-e coast and 186 km s-w of Adelaide, it is also SA's oldest European settlement founded in 1836. Kingscote was named after a director of the South Australian Company and remained an important port until 1860s. Just north of town are the steep cliffs that descend to Reeves Point (old Kingscote) an important SA heritage site where The Mulberry Tree was planted in 1836 and which still bears fruit. Nearby the National Trust Hope Cottage Museum displays the area's history with interesting exhibits and displays. The cottage was built in 1850s together with adjoining Faith & Charity cottages, although Faith no longer stands. Also here is SA's oldest lighthouse, Cape Willoughby (1852) transferred to the site from Cape Willoughby (eastern tip of island). Kingscote is steeped in history as is apparent from the town's cemetery, SA's oldest located in Seaview Rd. Tiny fairy penguins come ashore in Kingscote each evening to the delight of tourists and locals alike.
