(Pop 2 300)
King Island is a remote Bass Strait island halfway to Victoria 80 km n-e of Tasmania. The 126 000 ha attractive island belongs to Tasmania and was named after early NSW Governor King. Apart from early sealers and shipwrecked castaways, European settlement only began in 1855. With a rugged 145 km coastline, over 60 shipwrecks occurred in its history resulting in the building of five lighthouses, the most important being Cape Wickham (1861). A pastoral industry was established early and today remains a vital part of the economy renowned for its excellent unpasteurized dairy products together with mining, lobsters, kelp and a wind farm.
