Kempsey is a Macleay River township on the Mid North Coast
428 km n-e of Sydney. Original
inhabitants were the Ngamba-ngagu Aborigines with
early cedar cutters arriving in 1820s and the railway
in 1917. When the cedar was exhausted, dairying and
crops sustained the economy until the
Akubra hat factory was established in 1974. Today
Kempsey is a thriving rural centre servicing the
