Katoomba is the Blue Mountains largest town & main tourist destination. Located 110 km west of Sydney at an altitude of 1 030 m, the Aboriginal word 'Godoomba' means 'water tumbling over a hill'. Originally called The Crushers due to coal discoveries (1840s), the railway (1878) brought a profusion of holiday makers to the area for the excellent bushwalking, wonderful valley views & gracious hotels. Amongst them The Carrington was the most elite also hosting amongst its prestigious guests, royalty during 1920s & 30s. At this time Katoomba was also famous as the 'Honeymoon Capital of Australia'. The mining declined and tourism grew as well as becoming a commuter zone for Greater Sydney. Blue Mountains Festival of Folk, Roots & Blues (Feb/Mar), Winter Magic Festival (June), Yulefest (June-Aug), Spring Gardens Festival (Sept-Nov).
