Kangaroo Island is Australia's third largest island (4 400 sq km). Located 110 km s-w of Adelaide, it is also one of its major tourist attractions. Original Aboriginal tribes left 3 000 years ago, followed by early sealers & whalers and official settlement in 1836. Harsh conditions and insufficient rainfall held settlement back until tourism. Regular car/passenger ferries from Cape Jervis to Penneshaw (16 km) take 1 hour and there are also flights from Adelaide.
